【BBE】Bible in Basic English
【NLT】New Living Translation
1:1
【BBE】Words of the Preacher, the son of David, king of Jerusalem.
【NLT】These are the words of the Teacher, King David's son, who ruled in Jerusalem.
1:2
【BBE】All is to no purpose, said the Preacher. All the ways of men are to no purpose.
【NLT】Everything is meaningless, says the Teacher, completely meaningless!
1:3
【BBE】What is a man profited by all his works he does under the sun?
【NLT】What do people get for their hard work under the sun?
1:4
【BBE】One generation goes and another comes, but the earth is for ever.
【NLT】Generations come and generation goes, but the earth never changes.
1:5
【BBE】The sun comes up and the sun goes down, goes back quickly to the place where he came up.
【NLT】The sun rises and the sun sets, hurries around to rise again.
1:6
【BBE】The wind goes to the south, turning back again to the north, circling round for ever.
【NLT】The wind blows south and then turns north. Around and around it goes, blowing in circle.
1:7
【BBE】All rivers go down to the sea but the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers go, there they go again.
【NLT】Rivers run into the sea but the sea is never full. The water returns again to the rivers and flows out again to the sea.
1:8
【BBE】All things are full of weariness, man may not give their story. The eye is never enough of its seeing, or the ear of its hearing.
【NLT】Everything is wearisome beyond description. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied. No matter how much we hear, we are not content.
1:9
【BBE】That which has been is that which is to be, and that which has been done is that which will be done. There is no new thing under the sun.
【NLT】History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new.
1:10
【BBE】Is there anything of which man say, see, it is new? It has been in the old time which was before us.
【NLT】Sometimes people say, here is something new! But actually it is old. Nothing is ever truly new.
1:11
【BBE】There is no memory for those who have gone before, and of those who come after, there will be no memory for those who are still to come after them.
【NLT】We don't remember what happened in the past, in future generations no one will remember what we are doing now.
1:12
【BBE】I, the Preacher, was the king over Israel in Jerusalem.
【NLT】I, the Teacher, was the king over Israel and I lived in Jerusalem.
1:13
【BBE】And gave my heart to searching out in wisdom all things which is done under heaven. It is a hard thing which God has put on the sons of men to do.
【NLT】I devoted myself to search for the understanding and explore by wisdom everything being done under heaven. And I soon discovered that God has dealt a tragic existence to the human race.
1:14
【BBE】I have seen all the works which are done under the sun. All is to no purpose and desire for wind.
【NLT】I observed everything going on under the sun, and really, it is all meaningless, like chasing the wind.
1:15
【BBE】That which is bent may not be made striaght, that which is not there may not be numbered.
【NLT】What is wrong cannot be made right, what is missing cannot be recovered.
1:16
【BBE】I said to heart, see, I have become great and am increased in wisdom than any who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has seen much wisdom and knowledge.
【NLT】I said to myself, look, I am wiser than any of the kings who ruled in Jerusalem before me. I have greater wisdom and knowledge than any of them.
1:17
【BBE】I gave my heart to getting knowledge of wisdom, and of the ways of the foolish. And I saw that this again is desire for wind.
【NLT】So I set out to learn everything from wisdom to madness and folly. And I learned firsthand that pursuing all these is like chasing the wind.
1:18
【BBE】Because in much wisdom is much grief. An increase of knowledge is increase of sorrow.
【NLT】The greater my wisdom the greater my grief. To increase knowledge only increases sorrow.
2:1
【BBE】I said in my heart, I will give you joy for a test, so take your pleasure. But it was to no purpose.
【NLT】I said to myself. Come one, let's try pleasure. Let's look for the good thing in life. But I found that this, too, was meaningless
2:2
【BBE】Of laughing I said, it is foolish; and of joy, what use is it?
【NLT】So I said, laugher is silly. What good does it do to seek pleasure?
2:3
【BBE】I made a search with my heart to give pleasure to my flesh with wine, still guiding my heart with wisdom, and to go after foolish things, so I might see that what is good for the sons of men to do under heavens all the days of their life.
【NLT】After much thought, I decided to cheer myself with wine. And while still seeking wisdom, I clutched at foolishness. In this way, I tried to experience the only happiness most people find during their brief life in this world.
2:4
【BBE】I undertook great works, building myself houses and planting vine-gardens.
【NLT】I also tried to find meaning by building huge homes for myself and planting beautiful vineyards.
2:5
【BBE】I made myself gardens and fruit gardens, planting in them fruit trees of all sorts.
【NLT】I made gardens and parks, filling them with all kinds of fruit trees.
2:6
【BBE】I made pools to give water for the woods with their young trees.
【NLT】I built reservoirs to collect the water to irrigate my many flourishing groves.
2:7
【BBE】I got men-servants and women-servants, and they gave birth to sons and daughters in my house. I had great wealth of herds and flocks, more than all who were in Jerusalem before me.
【NLT】I bought slaves, both men and women, and others were born into my household. I also owned large herds and flocks, more than any of the kings who had lived in Jerusalem before me.
2:8
【BBE】I got together silver and gold and the wealth of kings and of countries. I got makers of song, male and female; and the delights of the sons of men, girls of all sorts to be my bride.
【NLT】I collected great sums of silver and gold, the treasure of many kings and provinces. I hired wonderful singers, both men and women, and had many beautiful concubines. I had everything a man could desire.
2:9
【BBE】And I became great; increasing more than all who had been before me in Jerusalem, and my wisdom was still with me.
【NLT】So I became greater than all who had lived in Jerusalem before me, and my wisdom never failed me.
2:10
【BBE】And nothing which was desired by my eyes did I keep from them. I did not keep any joy from my heart because my heart took pleasure in all my works, and this was my reward.
【NLT】Anything I wanted, I would take. I denied myself no pleasure. I even find great pleasure in hard work, a reward for all my labors.
2:11
【BBE】Then I saw all the work which my hands had made, everything I had been working to do, I saw that all was to no purpose and desire for wind, and there was no profit under the sun.
【NLT】But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere.
2:12
【BBE】Then I went again in search of wisdom and of foolish ways. What may the man do who comes after the king? The thing which he has done before.
【NLT】Then I decided to compare wisdom with foolishness. For who can do this better than I, the king?
2:13
【BBE】Then I saw that wisdom is better than foolish ways, as the light is better than the dark.
【NLT】I thought wisdom is better than foolishness, just as light is better than darkness.
2:14
【BBE】The wise man's eyes are in his head, but the foolish man goes walking in the dark. But still I saw that the same event comes to them all.
【NLT】For the wise can see where they are going, but fools walk in the dark. Yet I saw that the wise and the foolish share the same fate.
2:15
【BBE】Then said I in my heart, as it comes to the foolish man, so will it come to me; so why have I been wise overmuch? Then I said in my heart, this again is to no purpose.
【NLT】Both will die. Then I said to myself, since I will end up the same as the foolish, what is the value of all my wisdom? This is all so meaningless.
2:16
【BBE】Of the wise, as of the foolish, there is no memory for ever, seeing those who now are will have gone from memory in the days to come. See how death comes to the wise as to the foolish.
【NLT】For the wise and the foolish both die. The wise will not be remembered any longer than the foolish. In the days to come, both will be remembered.
2:17
【BBE】So I was hating life, because everything under the sun was evil to me. All is to no purpose and desire for wind.
【NLT】So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless, like chasing the wind.
2:18
【BBE】Hate had I for all my work which I had done, because the man who comes after me will have its fruits.
【NLT】I came to hate all my hard work here on earth, for I must leave to others everything I have earned.
2:19
【BBE】And who is to say whether that man will be wise or foolish? But he will have power over all my work I have done and in which I have been wise under the sun. This again is to no purpose.
【NLT】And who can tell whether my successors will be wise or foolish? Yet they will control everything I have gained by my skill and hard work under the sun. How meaningless.
2:20
【BBE】So my mind was turned to grief for all the trouble I had taken and all my wisdom under the sun.
【NLT】So I gave up in despair, questioning the value of all my hard work in this world.
2:21
【BBE】Because there is a man whose work has been done with wisdom, with knowledge, and with an expert hand; but one who has done nothing for it will take it for his heritage. This again is to no purpose and a great evil.
【NLT】Some people work wisely with knowledge and skill, then must leave the fruit of their efforts to someone who hasn't worked for it. This, too, is meaningless, a great tragedy.
2:22
【BBE】What does a man get for all his work, and for the weight of care with which he has done his work under the sun?
【NLT】So what do people get in this life for all their hard work and anxiety?
2:23
【BBE】All his days are sorrow, and his work is full of grief. Even in the night, his heart has no rest. This again is to no purpose.
【NLT】Their days of labor are filled with pain and grief. Even at night, their minds cannot rest. It is all meaningless.
2:24
【BBE】There is nothing better for a man than taking meat and drink, and having delight in his work. This again I saw was from the hand of God.
【NLT】So I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink, and to find satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God.
2:25
【BBE】Who may take food or have pleasure without him?
【NLT】Who can eat or enjoy anything apart from him?
2:26
【BBE】To the man with whom he is pleased, God gives wisdom and pleasure and joy. But to sinner, he gives the work of getting goods together and storing up wealth, to give to him in whom God has pleasure. This again is to no purpose and desire for wind.
【NLT】God gives wisdom, knowledge and joy to those who please him. But if a sinner becomes wealthy, God takes the wealth away and gives it to those who please him. This, too, is meaningless like chasing the wind.
